Howdy Cowpokes,

Today found me and KPE in the canoe on a Twin Cities area lake in search of largemouth. The sun was high and bright, but as long as we fished the shady side of cover the bite was pretty good. Lots of bass, a couple pike, a very small tiger musky, and some bluegill. I figured a pumpkinseed should be an easy species to add to the day, so I broke out the 4wt fly rod and a foam grasshopper.

Sunfish love a floating bug, so before long a bluegill or two had grabbed my hopper. I had a take near some lily pads, set the hook, and started a tussle with a sunfish. Never did find out what species of sunfish, because I noticed something was *chasing* that sunfish. I let the sunny have some line and tried to make out what was doing the hunting in the depths. I lost track of both fish, but noticed that my fly line was moving. I set the hook and immediately realized this was no sunfish on the other end of the line. My little 4wt. got bent over like a pretzel as a 6.4 pound largemouth realized I'd just stuck it with a hook.

Some quick net work by KPE landed a tank-sized bass, with my hopper neatly hooked inside it's mouth. I don't know if the fly got loose and the bass grabbed it, or if the bass tried to swallow the sunfish and got stuck in the process, but I'm proud to have landed a fish of this size on a 4wt. fly rod.

Wow 6lb club in MN is rare! That's a HOG!
On a 4wt? That makes it even more awesome, man. You could fit your whole fist in that mouth!
Chain Pickerel: All the bad assery of a Northern Pike wrapped up in a smaller, prettier package.
That bass surely gave you a run for for your money. Great job!
I smell feet. Or is that the fish you caught today?
